Blogs and Blogging

Giving a plug!

On twitter there is a tradition that on a Friday you give an indication to your followers of who else they should be following. The same tradition doesn’t exist in the blogosphere but we feel it is high time we give some love to our favourite blogs out there.

In a slight change from the normal plugs we thought we’d also link to some of our favourite pieces on those blogs (many of which we’ve probably linked to on twitter). Too often blogs are transitory in nature and good pieces of writing are remembered for a day or two and then promptly forgotten. Hopefully, this will help address this.

So without further ado:

Fighting Monsters

This blog about social work in the UK written by a practising social worker is a must read for anyone working in that field and a very interesting read for everyone else.

A few weeks ago, when the super-injunction furore was at its height, the author of the blog explained in a way that almost no-one else managed the difference between the celebrity injunction and the type that have also been targeted in relation to Family Court and Court of Protection. It is well worth a read.

Some things might not be important

But they are really annoying

There are an awful lot of very big issues facing local government at the moment which have been blogged about by ourselves and by many others far smarter and more linked in than we are.  There are also major issues facing individuals within services and teams which will affect their lives and future.

That being said, sometimes it’s the little things that count.  Issues that perhaps might have been looked over in the past seem to be far more annoying now, and I find my degree of ire rising along with an emergence of a hitherto undiscovered rant gene within me.

So, in the form of a short list and in an effort to get them out of my system, here are five things that are annoying me at the moment.  All are trivial, all are insignificant in the grand scheme of things; all are making me want to go a bit Samuel L Jackson and start smiting wantonly. (more…)

Do buildings (and toilets) matter?

Is this too extravagant for Bob Neill?

This post could be full of spluttering outrage as it is a post about council accommodation and the battering it has taken in the press over the past month. But I’ll try to be more restrained.

For those who weren’t watching our good friends at the DCLG have decided that being the Department FOR Communities and Local Government actually means working very hard to discredit local authorities. There are many ways to do this but the method of choice at the moment is the planted news story with handy Ministerial quote provided.

The stories in question are all about council accommodation, what you or I might describe as the ‘1960s office block I work in’ is described by Bob Neill (DCLG minister of choice for getting upset about buildings) as part of the:

age of vanity makeovers

The particular story that this quote comes from relates to the amount of money councils have spent on refurbishing their council buildings. Bob Neill didn’t do his research and discover that the chief offender (Richmond) were moving out of a rented accommodation that cost £700,000 per year and updating their accommodation had allowed them to do so.
